Journey to the West 098: The Pilgrims and the Kingdom of Women

Arrival in the Kingdom of Women

After their victory in the Kingdom of Righteousness, Tripitaka and his disciples continued their journey westward. They soon arrived at a mysterious and secluded land known as the Kingdom of Women (女儿国). This kingdom was unique in that it was entirely populated by women, with no men allowed within its borders. The women of the kingdom lived in harmony, and their queen ruled with grace and wisdom.

The pilgrims were initially unaware of the kingdom’s unique customs and were surprised to find that they were the first men to set foot in the land. The Queen of the Kingdom of Women welcomed them as honored guests, intrigued by their mission and the tales of their journey.

The Queen’s Proposal

As the pilgrims spent time in the kingdom, the Queen became particularly fascinated with Tripitaka, whose purity and devotion to the Dharma deeply impressed her. She saw in him the qualities of a noble and wise leader and began to develop feelings for him. The Queen proposed to Tripitaka, offering him the throne and a life of luxury and comfort as her consort.

Tripitaka, however, was committed to his sacred mission and knew that he could not abandon it, even for the love and admiration of a queen. He respectfully declined the proposal, explaining that his duty to retrieve the sacred scriptures and spread the teachings of the Buddha was his highest calling.

The Queen, though saddened by his decision, respected Tripitaka’s dedication and allowed the pilgrims to continue their journey. However, not all in the kingdom were pleased with this outcome.

The Plot of the Demoness

Unbeknownst to the pilgrims, a powerful demoness had infiltrated the Kingdom of Women, disguised as one of the Queen’s trusted advisors. The demoness saw the Queen’s affection for Tripitaka as an opportunity to disrupt the pilgrims’ mission and sought to use the situation to her advantage.

The demoness devised a plan to trap the pilgrims in the kingdom, intending to prevent them from continuing their journey. She spread rumors among the people, sowing doubt and fear, and even attempted to cast spells to bind Tripitaka to the kingdom forever.

The Pilgrims’ Escape

Wukong, always vigilant, quickly realized that something was amiss. He confronted the Queen’s advisor and discovered her true identity as the demoness. A fierce battle ensued between Wukong and the demoness, with the other disciples joining the fight to protect Tripitaka and ensure their safe departure from the kingdom.

The demoness, using dark magic, created illusions and summoned spirits to fight against the pilgrims. However, Wukong’s strength and determination, combined with the teamwork of Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, allowed them to overpower the demoness and break her spell.

The Queen, now aware of the demoness’s treachery, apologized to Tripitaka and his disciples for the trouble they had faced. She thanked them for their bravery and for saving her kingdom from the demoness’s influence.

Continuing the Journey

With the demoness defeated and the kingdom once again at peace, the pilgrims prepared to continue their journey. The Queen, though still saddened by Tripitaka’s departure, offered her blessings and gifts to aid them on their way.

The chapter ends with the pilgrims leaving the Kingdom of Women behind, their spirits renewed by their victory and the knowledge that they had once again overcome the forces that sought to derail their mission. They knew that their journey would continue to challenge them, but they were confident that, with the Dharma as their guide, they could overcome any obstacle in their path.
