Journey to the West 097: The Pilgrims and the Righteous King

The Kingdom of Righteousness

After their intense encounter with the Red Boy in the Flame Mountains, Tripitaka and his disciples continued their journey westward. They soon arrived in a prosperous and peaceful kingdom known as the Kingdom of Righteousness (正义国). This kingdom was renowned for its fair and just ruler, the Righteous King (正义王), who governed his people with wisdom, compassion, and a deep commitment to the principles of the Dharma.

The Righteous King was beloved by his subjects, who lived in harmony under his benevolent rule. The kingdom was a beacon of justice and virtue, attracting travelers from far and wide who sought refuge and guidance. Tripitaka and his disciples were welcomed warmly by the king and his court, and they were invited to stay as honored guests.

The King's Dilemma

Despite the kingdom’s outward prosperity, the Righteous King was troubled by a grave concern. He had recently been visited by a mysterious and powerful demon who threatened to bring ruin to his land unless the king surrendered his throne. The demon, known as the Evil Monarch (邪魔王), had challenged the king to a battle of wits and strength, claiming that whoever won would rule the kingdom.

The Righteous King, though wise and just, knew that the demon possessed great power and cunning. He feared for his people and his kingdom, and he sought the advice of Tripitaka and his disciples, hoping that they could help him overcome this threat.

The Pilgrims' Strategy

After hearing the king's dilemma, Wukong devised a plan to confront the Evil Monarch and protect the kingdom. He suggested that the pilgrims face the demon in the king’s place, using their combined strength and wisdom to defeat him. The Righteous King, though reluctant to put his guests in danger, agreed to the plan, knowing that the pilgrims were his best hope.

The Evil Monarch arrived at the appointed time, ready to challenge the Righteous King. However, he was surprised to find Tripitaka and his disciples standing in the king’s place. The demon laughed, confident that he could easily defeat them, but Wukong, undeterred, stepped forward to accept the challenge.

The Battle with the Evil Monarch

The battle between Wukong and the Evil Monarch was fierce and intense. The demon unleashed a barrage of dark magic, creating illusions and summoning powerful forces to overwhelm the pilgrims. Wukong, using his Ruyi Jingu Bang, countered the demon’s attacks with skill and precision, while Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing provided support, blocking the demon’s attempts to strike at Tripitaka.

The Evil Monarch, realizing that brute force alone would not be enough to defeat the pilgrims, attempted to deceive them by creating a powerful illusion that made it appear as though the kingdom was being destroyed. However, Wukong, with his ability to see through illusions, saw the truth and quickly dispelled the demon’s trickery.

The demon, frustrated by his inability to defeat the pilgrims, grew increasingly desperate and reckless. Wukong seized the opportunity to deliver a series of powerful blows, weakening the demon’s defenses and forcing him to retreat.

The Righteous King's Victory

With the Evil Monarch weakened, the Righteous King, inspired by the pilgrims’ courage and determination, stepped forward to confront the demon himself. Drawing on the teachings of the Dharma and the strength of his convictions, the king challenged the demon to a final test—a test of righteousness.

The Evil Monarch, unable to match the king’s wisdom and moral fortitude, was ultimately defeated. He was banished from the kingdom, and the land was once again safe from his malevolent influence.

The Righteous King, grateful for the pilgrims’ assistance, expressed his deep thanks and offered them his kingdom’s protection and support on their journey. The people of the kingdom celebrated the victory, and the pilgrims were honored for their role in preserving the kingdom’s peace and justice.

Continuing the Journey

With the Evil Monarch defeated and the Kingdom of Righteousness safe once more, the pilgrims continued their journey westward. They left the kingdom with a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that their mission to retrieve the sacred scriptures was more important than ever.

The chapter ends with the pilgrims moving forward, their spirits uplifted by their victory and the knowledge that they had helped preserve justice and righteousness in the world. They knew that their journey would continue to present challenges, but they were confident that, with the Dharma as their guide, they could overcome any obstacle in their path.
