Journey to the West 056: The Pilgrims and the Three Daoist Immortals

The Three Daoist Immortals

As Tripitaka and his disciples continued their journey westward, they arrived at a peaceful and secluded valley known as Azure Lotus Valley (青莲谷). The valley was home to three powerful Daoist immortals: Tiger Strength Immortal (虎力大仙), Deer Strength Immortal (鹿力大仙), and Goat Strength Immortal (羊力大仙). These immortals were known for their mastery of ancient Daoist arts and their ability to manipulate the elements.

The three Daoist immortals were revered by the local people, who believed that they possessed divine powers. However, the immortals were actually cunning and deceitful beings who used their powers for selfish purposes. They would capture travelers and force them to worship them as gods, using their life force to increase their own strength.

The Deception

As the pilgrims entered the valley, they were greeted by the three Daoist immortals, who appeared to be kind and benevolent. The immortals invited the pilgrims to stay with them, offering food and shelter. Despite Wukong’s suspicions, Tripitaka, ever trusting and compassionate, accepted their hospitality.

The immortals, seeing an opportunity to capture Tripitaka and use his pure spirit to increase their power, devised a plan to deceive the pilgrims. They created elaborate illusions and used their powers to control the elements, making it appear as though they were performing miracles.

The Battle with the Daoist Immortals

Wukong, realizing that the immortals were not as benevolent as they seemed, decided to confront them. He saw through their illusions and challenged them to reveal their true intentions. The Daoist immortals, knowing that their deception had been exposed, decided to attack the pilgrims.

The battle that ensued was intense, with the immortals using their mastery of the elements to launch powerful attacks on the pilgrims. Tiger Strength Immortal summoned fierce winds and storms, Deer Strength Immortal created illusions to confuse and disorient the pilgrims, and Goat Strength Immortal manipulated the earth to create obstacles in their path.

Wukong fought back with all his might, using his Ruyi Jingu Bang to counter the immortals’ attacks. Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing joined the fight, using their weapons to fend off the illusions and protect Tripitaka from harm.

The Immortals’ Defeat

Despite their power, the Daoist immortals were no match for the combined strength and determination of the pilgrims. Wukong used his shape-shifting abilities and quick thinking to outmaneuver the immortals and break their hold over the elements.

One by one, the immortals were defeated, their illusions shattered and their powers neutralized. Realizing that they had been bested, the Daoist immortals begged for mercy. Tripitaka, ever compassionate, offered them a chance at redemption, urging them to abandon their deceitful ways and follow the path of the Dharma.

Humbled by their defeat and moved by Tripitaka’s words, the immortals accepted the offer and vowed to use their powers for good rather than selfish gain.

Continuing the Journey

With the Daoist immortals redeemed and the valley now safe, the pilgrims continued their journey westward. They left Azure Lotus Valley behind, their spirits uplifted by their victory and the knowledge that they had once again overcome a great challenge on their path to enlightenment.

The chapter ends with the pilgrims moving forward, their resolve strengthened by the trials they had faced and the lessons they had learned along the way.
