Journey to the West 009: The Three Disciples Face Their First Trial Together

Crossing the River of Flowing Sand

As Tripitaka and his three disciples—Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing—continued their pilgrimage to the West, they encountered a vast and treacherous river known as the River of Flowing Sand. The river was notorious for its violent currents and the deadly quicksand that swallowed anyone who dared to cross it. Despite the dangers, the group knew they had no choice but to find a way across to continue their journey.

Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing worked together to devise a plan to cross the river safely. Their teamwork was crucial as they faced this formidable obstacle, and it marked the first major trial they had to overcome as a united group.

Building the Raft

Wukong, always resourceful, suggested building a raft to carry Tripitaka across the river. Using his incredible strength, Zhu Bajie gathered large logs and sturdy vines from the nearby forest, while Sha Wujing, with his knowledge of the river, helped construct a raft that could withstand the powerful currents.

The three disciples worked tirelessly, each contributing their unique skills to the task. Wukong, with his agility, helped secure the logs, while Zhu Bajie used his brute strength to bind the raft together. Sha Wujing, familiar with the river's dangers, provided guidance on how to navigate the treacherous waters.

Crossing the River

With the raft completed, the group set out to cross the River of Flowing Sand. Wukong led the way, using his magical abilities to calm the waters and ward off any lurking dangers. Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing guided the raft, using their combined strength to steer it through the river’s powerful currents.

As they crossed, the river's treacherous nature became apparent. The currents grew stronger, and the quicksand beneath the surface threatened to pull the raft under. Despite these challenges, the disciples remained focused and determined. Wukong’s quick thinking and the group’s teamwork allowed them to navigate the dangers successfully.

A Test of Unity

During the crossing, the group faced several unexpected challenges, including sudden whirlpools and hidden sand pits. These obstacles tested their unity and trust in one another. Wukong's leadership, Zhu Bajie's strength, and Sha Wujing's experience proved invaluable as they worked together to overcome each hurdle.

Their successful crossing of the River of Flowing Sand was not just a physical triumph but also a testament to their growing bond as a team. It demonstrated their ability to work together and support each other, setting the foundation for the many trials they would face in the future.

Reaching the Other Side

After a long and arduous journey, the group finally reached the other side of the river. Tripitaka, grateful for his disciples’ efforts, praised their teamwork and dedication. This moment solidified the disciples' commitment to the pilgrimage and to each other, as they realized that only by working together could they hope to reach the Western Paradise and fulfill their mission.

This chapter highlights the importance of unity, trust, and cooperation, themes that are central to Journey to the West. These values are also explored in modern adaptations like Black Myth: Wukong, where the characters' teamwork and growth are emphasized as they face challenges on their epic journey.
